Over the last 2 months, over 200 physicians came together from all-across the country to create the first ever Canadian Physician’s Virtual Choir project, and we are elated to announce:

The video is now available!

Initially inspired by the work of Voices Rock Medicine, in Toronto, the Calgary Physician Choir, in Calgary, and Phoenix’s own Vox Panacea, in Vancouver; Phoenix Chamber Choir was honoured to take on the management and artistic direction of this project. Our Artistic Director, Nicholle Andrews, originally from Newfoundland and Labrador, was able to secure permissions for us to perform “Ordinary Day” by Great Big Sea, and even worked her magic to get some special guests to share their talents with the performance!

Voices Rock Medicine – Toronto

Vox Panacea – Vancouver

In April 2020, Voices Rock Medicine – a choir made up of soprano and alto physicians in Toronto – premiered an amazing video of them singing “together” through the use of technology – all separately filmed videos compiled to create a virtual choir.  Inspired by the Toronto-based choir, there are at least two new physician choirs started in the past few months – Vancouver-based Vox Panacea and the Calgary Physician Choir, all rehearsing using online platforms.

For so many physicians, choral singing is a place to forget about the worries of the day and just breathe and do something creative.  The added advantage of singing in your living room (or call-room!) and that no one else in the rehearsal can hear you is liberating – especially for those who have not sung in a choir for many years!

If you loved our parody videos this spring and summer, you will love what we have in store next. We are inviting any and all members of the broader Phoenix community who would like to be “Part of our World” to be featured at the Gathering Together concert as we parody the Disney classic “Part of Your World.”

Here’s a sneak peek of the lyrics:
“We want to be where the people are
We wanna to sing,
wanna sing together
We miss our friends in our
(Whad’ya call ‘it?) oh – choir”

Fun, right?! Be brave and join us!

“Music expresses that which cannot be put into words and that which cannot remain silent” -Victor Hugo

Throughout history, music has played the role of healer, communicator, and protestor when words or other social commentary miss the mark. Since late May 2020, a frustratingly age-old revolution has once again crescendoed from a mellowed hum to a loud roar as people around the world have come together to proclaim that Black Lives Matter, and to demand change from law enforcement and other social systems. All while the impact of the pandemic continues to ravage the world, claiming lives, jobs, and even basic everyday pleasantries in its path, people gather to march and cry out for a more just society. The impact of this cultural moment is not lost on musicians nor community choirs such as Phoenix. The call is ours to promote human flourishing and freedom in our craft. No doubt, our future plans continue to be folded and reshaped by the happenings of this year, and we know that the work we are doing now is necessary.

As Phoenix excitedly awaits hosting VOCES8 in the spring of 2021 here in Vancouver, we are also eager about a more imminent opportunity for partnership with VOCES8.

Broadcast in HD from the intimate setting of the VOCES8 Centre, the renowned British group is thrilled to debut, Live From London, a new online festival featuring some of the world’s finest vocal ensembles. The line-up includes VOCES8, I Fagiolini, Stile Antico, The Swingles, The Sixteen (from Kings Place), The Gesualdo Six, Apollo5, Chanticleer (from San Francisco), and a special guest appearance by The Academy of Ancient Music.

This line-up of artists has never before appeared together in the same festival, and it will be the first time many of the groups have performed since the beginning of lockdown: “After six months apart, it is quite simply a momentous occasion for The Sixteen to be reunited again for this concert. We are delighted to be a part of Live from London,” said Harry Christophers, founder and conductor of The Sixteen.

These award-winning ensembles bring you their favourite works and pieces for which they’ve become renowned, singing repertoire from the Renaissance to contemporary A Cappella – a veritable ‘transport of delight’ from the superb acoustic of Wren’s St Anne and St Agnes Church in the heart of the City of London.

The festival will be broadcast online every Saturday at 7pm BST / 11 am PST for ten weeks from the first of August, offering a chance for a worldwide audience to reconnect with live choral music. Ticket holders will be able to watch live and/or on demand from the date of broadcast until 3rd October and in addition will be granted viewing rights to the full, 4K post-produced, concert film(s) for the rest of the month of October. Each broadcast concert lasts 60 minutes.

In the spring and early summer of 2020, Phoenix published three virtual choir YouTube videos, meant to serve as fun, encouraging public service announcements reminding viewers of the importance of taking COVID-19 seriously. While we were elated by the rousing responses we received from around the world, we also became aware of similar choirs of all sizes, styles, and budgets trying to create similar projects in an era where all choral singing must be virtual. After receiving a few of your questions, we decided to put together a two-part video series about how Phoenix produced our videos in hopes it will be helpful to others. Read more

Earlier this month, we announced David Rosborough as the Phoenix Assistant Conductor for the 2020-2021 Season. We are eager to begin working with Dave and for our singers to grow under his leadership.

As is now tradition for new Phoenix artistic team members, we wanted to introduce our audience to “the person behind the musical resumé.”
