At the end of last season, Phoenix excitedly welcomed Dr. Nicholle Andrews as the new Artistic Director, yet due to her remote location this also opened up an opportunity. The idea was to hire an up-and-coming local conductor to learn under Dr. Andrews’ mentorship, as well as take the lead on the weekly rehearsals here in Vancouver while collaborating on artistic direction.

This, friends, is how we welcomed back Ian Bannerman, Phoenix alumnus, to the role of Assistant Conductor for the 2019-2020 Reawakening season.

The lineup for the spring Earth Songs concert continues to become more unique and engaging. In addition to the stunning garden setting, the two world premieres of musical pieces, an enhanced experience for a few select guests, the concert will also feature a live artist: local painter, Corrinne Wolcoski. Wolcoski’s painting will go home with one incredibly fortunate bidder at the end of the Earth Songs concert on April 22.

On April 22, Phoenix Chamber Choir will be putting on what may be the most unique concert to date. The performance will take place at a gorgeous garden venue, versus a church or concert hall, as a part of a commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. Phoenix is excited to premiere not one, but two original works, both by young composers commissioned by Phoenix: Timothy Cunningham and Katerina Gimon.

Named as one of Canada’s hot 30 classical musicians under 30 by the Canadian Broadcasting Company; composer, improviser, and vocalist Katerina Gimon’s uniquely dynamic, poignant, and eclectic compositional style is rapidly gaining her a reputation as one of the most distinctive emerging voices in contemporary Canadian composition and beyond.

Phoenix is excited to introduce young composer Timothy Cunningham to our repertoire and community. Cunningham is the winner of our inaugural Student Choral Composition Competition, which was open in the fall of 2019 at the University of Redlands in Redlands, Calif. where Cunningham is an undergraduate and where Phoenix Artistic Director, Dr. Nicholle Andrews, is […]

We are excited to announce that our spring concert, Earth Songs, which is already promised to be one of the most unique Phoenix concerts to date, now includes an enhanced ticket option.

Concert guests can now obtain all-day access to stunning VanDusen Botanical Gardens, enjoy a two-course meal at Shaughnessy Restaurant on the grounds of the gardens, meet and socialize with Phoenix Artistic Director Dr. Nicholle Andrews and Assistant Conductor, Ian Bannerman, and be the first to hear the Board of Director’s new vision for Phoenix Chamber Choir, all for a flat enhancement fee. The concert will follow dinner.

When artistic director, Dr. Nicholle Andrews kicks off her shoes before beginning a Phoenix rehearsal, the singers chuckle perhaps, but think little of it.

Yet this small habit, now acquired as part of the Phoenix fabric, has inspired a bigger vision for giving back this holiday season.

Warm socks, however basic, are a privilege. It’s no secret that in Vancouver, the winters are cold and damp and too many people do not have access to warm, dry socks. Phoenix as a community values giving back and doing our part to ensure our whole community is thriving.

Because of this, we are partnering with First United Church Community Ministry Society and Atira Women’s Resource Society to provide socks for folks in our city who may need them this winter.

We are elated to welcome Dr. Nicholle Andrews from the University of Redlands in Southern California as Phoenix’s 4th Artistic Director. One of the reasons we were attracted to Dr. Andrews was not only her impressive musical resume, but also her dynamic personality and values that align with so much of what we strive for within the Phoenix community.

Here are some questions we recently asked her, so that our audience could get to know her a bit better.
