Announcing the 2022-2023 Season
This 2022-2023 season will be a year-long celebration of Forty Years of Phoenix Chamber Choir. Phoenix is honoured and humbled to recognize four consecutive decades of creating music together for our community. When we consider the transitions and decisions that an organization of our size, stature, and mandate must weather in order to experience the success we have for as long as we have, we are especially grateful. We know that is in large part due to you all: our devoted and loyal audience. This season will be a celebration of all of us: founders, choristers, directors past and present, composers and listeners alike.
Phoenix invites you to join us this 2022-2023 season as we journey together through the past and find ourselves looking toward the future:
This season will be about celebrating the Phoenix family in its entirety, with our concerts accessible both in person and online. Though we celebrate our history and tradition to date, our 40th season is not a podium or finish line, but a threshold toward many more years of artistic excellence and communal growth. We are steadfast in our intention to build a legacy founded on accessibility, inclusivity, and creativity through audience diversity, innovative events, and new commissions from underrepresented composers. Phoenix believes that choral music is for everyone, and that there is no more effective way to tie together the human experience but through song, which is why we are beginning this season with a new holiday tradition.
The first concert will be an all-ages concert where families with young children are welcome to join us as we ring in the holiday season. Phoenix aims to engage future generations in choral music to keep the art alive for years to come, and we welcome any and all listeners to join our Phoenix family this concert.
Our traditional Christmas concerts, presented both Saturday and Sunday afternoons the weekend of December 10, feature seasonal choral music, mixed with music and readings from authors and composers around the world. This concert will be a combination of audience favorites and exciting new pieces from abroad.
This February concert will feature new arrangements of love, heartbreak and passion. Our singers are sure to inspire you, with layers of harmony and dissonance, raising their voices as one. We will also premiere a brand new work by the winner of our 2022 Composition Competition!
Our spring concert will be our quintessential 40th year anniversary concert, journeying through Phoenix’s rich history. With appearances from previous artistic directors conducting the choir and an audience sing along with Melanie DeMore, we are taking time to recognize the individuals who’ve helped build our program.
Phoenix also aims to engage future generations in choral music, which is why we are proud to include a junior high choirs who will be participating in the 2022-2023 Phoenix Choral Experience, an outreach program for youth choirs and educators. We are delighted that our 40th anniversary concert will premiere a new commissioned work by Saunder Choi performed together by Phoenix Chamber Choir and youth choirs from the Phoenix Choral Experience.
We are excited to reflect on our identity as a chamber choir, and to re-engage our mission of bringing light, hope, and harmony through choral music to the metro Vancouver community and our audience around the globe. This concert includes multiple artistic collaborations, and we could not be happier to engage so many new and talented individuals, along with remembering the individuals who’ve gotten us to where we are now.
You are invited to join us as we reflect on the traditions of the past, while bringing with us change and hope into the future! Tickets will be on sale this fall.
